Receptions - More Fun to Go to than to Cater

Did you ever notice that it is more fun to attend a party or reception than it is to host it?  Well I have.  I appreciate each time I do one of these events that it is far more enjoyable to be the person who shows up and enjoys the food and beverages and decorations.  I guess that is getting older for ya...
I made this arrangement from a garden mum purchased at Walmart (last minute!) and some canna and hosta leaves and marigolds all picked from the flower beds.  Most flowers here are just gone - it was way tooooooo HOT this summer.  Many plants bloomed and were go so quickly it was crazy.  The heat was just too much for them.
This chocolate fudge cake turned out really nice - it looks like a flower to me.  I just left the Bundt cake turned upside down cause it looked so pretty.  The took choc. icing in a ziploc with the corner cut off (cheapo cake decorating at it's finest) and started at the outer edge adn worked my way into the middle going in circles.  Right before serving time I sprinkle coarse sugar crystals on top.  So pretty.  The pic does not do it justice.
Next my favorite dessert, pumpkin bread baked as muffins or mini cakes - however you want to think ofit.  This was a very popular dessert and looked so pretty.  The cake stand was free from World Market!  It was my $10 birthday coupon they send out to you when you sign up as a World Market member.  I caught this on an online special with $0 shipping!  FREE and New = can't beat that combo!
These were also decorated with ready made cream cheese icing and the ziploc bag deal.  Works great and you just throw away the bag when you are done.  Zero clean up.

Notice my Scrabble letter sign - many people commented on that.  I thought it was a fun touch and folks seemed to like it.  Now I see why people collect those letters on Freecycle, etc.  They are fun and useful.

Make a Bed Skirt Storage System for Your Bed or Your Kids Bed

Sew a flirty pocket on a bed skirt for storage - what a fun, fancy, and frugal idea!
Practical and pretty, the pockets of this bed skirt are the perfect place to store books,
remotes and eyeglasses.
What You’ll Need:
These instructions are based on modifying a ready made bed skirt.
  •   Straight pins
  • Contrasting fabric for pockets and flaps
  • Tape measure
  • Thread and needle or sewing machine
INSTRUCTIONS:
To make the pockets, cut 9x9-inch squares of a contrasting fabric. Fold in and
press 1 inch all around to make a finished 7-inch square.
Topstitch all sides.
To make the flap on each pocket, cut 8x3-inch strips of fabric. Turn all edges
under 1/4 inch and again 1/4 inch, then press.
Topstich all sides.
Open the pleated and pressed strips, being careful not to flatten the pressed
seams.
Note:  you can also just make these pockets open patch style pockets
and skip this step :)

Put the skirt on your box spring top, between it and the mattress.

End of August/Beginning of September Blues - aka, Life of a Teacher's Wife

Well, I knew this was coming around, but I am never prepared for it.

We've got the end of August, beginning of September blues.  My husband starts his teaching (university level) next week.  I am starting a new job (!) mid September.  But until those checks starts flowing in,  we are running on the skinny edge of our bank account.

We will make it through this financial dry patch, we always do.  But I get tired of  that feeling of penny pinching.  I feel like I am always doing it - pinching pennies that is...  I am always either freecycling, "good willing", or couponing like crazy.  Partly because it is a habit you get into.  Partly because I like the "thrill of the hunt" for great deals.  And partly because it's just silly to pay the high prices that some stores offer.  But sometimes it is a little stressful.  Like now!

I know that there are many people way worse off that me, so I thank my lucky stars for what I have been blessed with.  I am confident that I will manage the family budget with the skills I have honed over the years.  I will also relish in the joy that mastering my finances gives me when I am successful in the end!

Here's what I am doing today to get the most out of my budget:
    *  I am going to do the 30 day eat from your pantry challenge.  I am doing inventory of my stockpile today and looking up some new recipes to try.    I will pass along some of the good ones I come up with.

    * I am going to watch on freecycle for people giving away items that I can either use or sell to earn some extra cash.

    * I am calling my local market research companies to see if I can get in on a product survey or two in the next couple of weeks.

    * I am scouring the temp job ads for freelance work.

    * Driving my car as little as possible to conserve gas and having my son ride the bus everyday instead of taking him to school.

    * Watching my utility usage, especially the AC - our bills have been very high this summer with the extreme heat.

    * Not purchasing any new home decorations or home items- use and redo what I have already.

    * Selling some things that I have already on Craig's List.

If you have any suggestions for money making ideas for me to use in the next 2 to 3 weeks, let me know!  I would love your input.

I Need Meat! The Hungry Ramblings of a Preteen

I never thought the day would come,,,

My super picky eater who mainly liked everything plain, no salt, maybe a little butter, no sauce and certainly not meat,

unless it was a hot dog or chicken nugget,

is now CRAVING MEAT.  All of a sudden a feel like the mother of a caveman.

Me need meat ughRemember ugh is taking the place of please here.

There is not time for please.   I can barely get the food cooked and shoved into him fast enough.

He has grown so much this year and with 7th grade and sports and school activities right around the corner there is no end in sight.  So I am trying to prepare for a larger food budget and also thinking about all of those little tricks our mothers and grandmothers used to stretch their food budgets.

I say all of this and the whole time I am thinking...I only have one child to feed, think of all of the families with 3 or 4 or more!  Man that is expensive!

Any way here are some simple tips to stretch the protein budget:

Make pasta, rice, couscous or some other starch dishes along with the meat to make it fill them up quicker and stretch the meat further.

Of course look for coupons and specials for meat sales, coming up right around Labor Day there should be some great sales going on for chicken, pork steaks, bratwurst and other BBQ meats.  Stock up!

Remember to rewrap meat in heavier freezer paper if you will be freezing it for any longer length of time, rule of thumb if it will be frozen longer than 30 days, rewrap the meat in freezer paper first before freezing.

Purchase or get from freecycle or other donation sites a  chest type freezer to store all of your stocked up meats.

Cook a whole chicken and then cut it up for individual servings.  It is much cheaper than purchasing precut chicken breasts, etc.  If there are parts of the chicken left on the bone, cook it down for chicken stock and to make chicken noodle soup.  Soup is a great way to fill up kids, add veggies to their diet, and use every little bit of the chicken to its fullest.

Use lower cost sources of protein such as boiled eggs or other cooked eggs to give kids the extra protein they need.  Peanut butter and other nut butters are great also.,

Make high fiber meals with bulgar, wheat germ, whole grain pastas, beans and other grains to fill up their tummys and keep their digestion moving.

Use complimentary proteins, like ancient cultures did.  This is the combination of plant sources proteins to make a complete protein, the best example I can think of is beans and rice.  When these two sources are combined it's like the equivalent of eating an animal source protein.  Pretty cool, right!
We make bean, rice and corn tortillas as a meal.  That is a very frugal but also healthy meal.
Other pairings are asian noodles with sesame seeds and the classic macaroni and cheese.  If you have not made homemade macaroni and cheese lately it is truly overdue.  That is a great easy frugal meal.

  1. Legumes and Grains - Black Beans and Rice with Red Peppers: Saute diced red peppers and onions in a non stick skillet. Add in drained and rinsed canned black beans and left over long grain rice. Add in a bit of cumin, black pepper and fresh chopped tomatoes and parsley. Cook until hot and serve.

  2. Legumes and Seeds - Asian Noodles with Sesame Seed Dressing: Toss left over spaghetti pasta noodles with chopped green onions, julienne peppers, toasted sesame seeds and cilantro with a homemade dressing made with sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, pepper, soy sauce and a bit of sugar.

  3. Grains with Dairy - Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

  7. The last thing I'll say, is boy am I glad school starts tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, I will miss my kiddo every single day.  Miss watching him play with the dog, doing things together, and most of all his innocence that still remains true  and sweet as he lives his preteen years.   He is a great kid and I am very proud.

We did not even take vacation this summer, so it was a long cooking summer for this mama.  I am going to enjoy the breaks during the week so I can get some of my stored up projects accomplished.  Painting, cleaning, maybe a new kitchen floor, and some shopping without someone asking me to get done so we can go!

That will make for a happy mom and kid.  Because kids don't like to shop but they do love to eat!

I will be posting this at the WOW linky party on Saavy Southern Style and also at Full Plate Thursdays.

    I Smell Bread - Yum!

The weather has finally turned cooler in St Louis.  I am so thankful.  I HATE HOT WEATHER!!

I love the autumn and the cooler temp's.  I know we will still have some hot days but we may be turning the corner.  We went to school yesterday with supplies and picked up schedules, locker assignments and paid for the class t-shirt and year book.  I could tell my son was less than thrilled (that's an understatement (:

He is going to miss all of the lazy fun days we have had over the summer.  But getting back into a schedule is good.  Once we're in it, things will be fine.  But right now it's like ripping off a bandaid!

This morning we are putting a batch of bread in the bread maker - the world's easiest way to make homemade bread.

First we got out the machine - we have not used this since the winter time - we don't really feel like making bread in the middle of the summer.

We got this machine from our wedding registry about 18 years ago and it still works perfectly.

hint, hint - I have seen lots of these posted on Freecycle - I think people clearing cabinet space - so if you want to try a machine you might try to get a FREE one!  Just make sure to ask the person if it still works - you probably don't want to waste gas and time picking up a broken machine.  Second make sure to ask if the bread machine paddle is with the machine - otherwise it will not mix and knead.  Those paddles are small and easy to lose, so it's a good idea to check for that also.
Okay, step 2, select the type of bread - our machine has about 6 different cycles including a dough making cycle.  The dough cycle is perfect for homemade pizza crust and calzone dough.

This is the easiest way to make pizza dough that I know.  No mess and no flour everywhere.  I will make a post on that in the near future, maybe this weekend.
Next measure and pour in all of the ingredients according to your recipe.  You can see a little mound in the middle of the dough pan - that is where the paddle is lifting and mixing the flour, yeast, & water mixture.

Then just walk away from it for about 2 hours.

We will post the finished bread photo later.  This is just to get you inspired to pull out your bread maker or to try the freecycle approach and see if you can score one that someone else is done with.

Now, on to making something with these gorgeous tomatoes.  Maybe some tomatoe, garlic, olive oil, basil, S&P, and a few other spices for a little snack with the fresh french bread that's baking.
Boy, is our house going to smell great by lunchtime.  Wish you were here to enjoy it with us :)

    Recipe for Classic French Bread:
    makes one large loaf

    1 1/2 cups water
3 1/4 cups white flour (or bread flour works great also)
    1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons fast rise yeast or 3 teaspoons active dry yeast (I just got several packets on clearance  3 packets for $.78 at my Target store - exp. date late 2012 - so you might check the clearance area.  Yeast is "expensive" for what it is, at least that's my opinion, so if you can save a little on the ingredients it's great.

Load into the machine according to your machine's instructions.  Follow the baking cycle recommended by your manufacturer.

Use Old Things That You Love, A Very Frugal Idea

This dollhouse turned shelf has all of the elements of the frugal household but done with style!  You get to re-purpose an item that may be sitting around and enjoy it each day as you use it in a new way.

Imagine - an antique dollhouse used as a laundry storage area!  If you notice there is also an old jewelry cabinet used to store thread, buttons, little laundry helper items and keys.  What a great place to collect coins found in pockets, and other small treasures.

This display would also be very effective in a mudroom or large pantry area.  Think about creating something unique like this in your home.  You will be amazed at the attention and rave reviews it will get from friends and family alike!

And then instead of getting rid of a childhood toy, you can have it live a useful life for years to come.

I am linking to Saavy Southern Style's Wow Us Wednesdays linky party.  Have fun!
